This is the moment Steve realizes it’s not going to be easy. That Sam might be right about Bucky not being in there any more. Look at Bucky’s eyes. Nothing but stone cold predator. And what’s worse is that it’s not some faceless assassin any more, it’s BUCKY. The face is still boyish and recognizable, but it’s attached to this murderous thing in black leather and metal and coldness. I’m sure Steve’s never actually seen that look on Bucky aimed at him before. Because Bucky was all smiles and big brotherly affection and concern and kindness to Steve. He’s maybe seen Bucky truly angry about things and maybe that look aimed at someone now and then and Steve always thought “thank God he’s my friend” because Bucky is intimidating when he’s riled and it’s unsettling to Steve, but he knows that will never be something HE has to worry about. Until here. And that’s when Steve’s heart really breaks.
